One Day by David Nicholls

Theme/Genre: Romance, Comedy, Drama
Form: Book/Novel
Author: David Nicholls

This novel talks about the journey of two people for twenty years. Emma and Dexter met on their graduation night in England. Their conversations covered up how their life will be when they’re at the age of 40. Every chapter of the book highlights what happens every July 15 successively for two decades. Emma started out her career by writing and performing plays while Dexter travels around the world, hooking up with girls. Both parties had various attempts on being in a relationship, and while they have relationships with other people, they both chose to be best friends, though both of them are longing for one another. Emma after sometime breaks up with her boyfriend after coming into a realization that he really loves another man. Emma and Dexter met again at a wedding, and Emma admits to herself she wants Dexter back. But at this point, Dexter has fallen in love with another woman who is pregnant at that time. After realizing things, they talked about their relationship in which Emma chooses Dexter. They got married and were living happy together until one day, Emma got into a bike accident in which she died. Three years after Emma’s death, Dexter, together with his daughter traveled to England where he met Emma, and they climbed the same mountain he climbed with Emma 19 years ago.

The novel One Day was written by David Nicholls. The book used creative techniques such as the use of wide imagination for the storyline of the author. The book also focused on one specific date, which is July 15, on different years and narrated events that took place on that date. It dawned to me that I should appreciate people more and never delay and or hesitate to make them feel how much I love them because it might be too late if you don’t cherish every moment you spend with them. The values of love and immediate appreciation are two of the things that came up into my realization as I read through this book. I believe the powerful message of this book was sent to its readers because in today’s age, people don’t know how to value what they have in life. They don’t know how to be content with whatever they have; they tend to focus on the flaws of their lives and therefore overlooking and neglecting the people who deserves their appreciation. I highly recommend reading this book for the values it will put upon you, not only in the romantic aspect but in life as well.
