I Almost Do - Taylor Swift

Theme: Broken Relationship
Form: Song
Writer/Singer: Taylor Swift

The song entitled “I Almost Do” by Taylor Swift basically talks about wanting and fighting the urge to talk to someone. In the song, Taylor gives this song to her guy whom she wants to get back with but she can’t because she does not want to be hurt anymore and reopen the wounds in her heart. She does not reply to his text messages because she is so afraid to say hello again to him and then after sometime she will be risking another goodbye. After the mess they made with their relationship, she still dreams of him having to touch her face, and asking herself if things will be worth the second chance. She once cared for what the guy thought, not only that, she really cared for him. Taylor still hopes that the guy wonders about her sometimes. The song technically portrays the feeling of Taylor after heartbreak and that she still has this part of heart that can’t let him go and hoping he still does too.

The song was written and sung by Taylor Swift. The rhythm and melody of the song caught my attention when I first heard this song. The way Taylor Swift sang every line of the song is filled with too much emotion that is why you can feel what is inside her heart. The message is too timely. There’s too much emotion on the lyrics of the song. I am sure that many girls can relate to this song because in today’s generation, a girl cannot express herself too much with a guy. They instead overthink about things and get their hopes too high on a guy. I believe this song to be such a powerful song and the message it conveys is just right for a girl’s heart which undergoes pain and heartbreak. The line in the song “And I hope you know that every time I don’t, I almost do.” struck me the most. The line tells its listeners that there are things which she wants to say and do for him yet she cannot or chose not to since she wants to forget the pain she felt and never get attached again. The song maybe interpreted differently by various listeners especially if a guy hears it. The value I learned from this song is that a person should know how to move on from heartbreak, learn from his or her mistakes, and value the things around him or her. One should know as well what limits to set herself or himself if he or she does not want to get hurt again for the same reason. The message of the song is being sent because sometimes or most of the time guys do not really know

Teens are going to extremes with texting

Theme: The Use of Cellular Phones Today

Form: Online Editorial Article

Writer: Jersey Journal

The editorial article entitled “Teens are going to extremes with texting” written by The Jersey Journal talks about how the use of cellular phones affects the lives of most teenagers today. It is said that too much use of cellular phones and non-stop texting have been a phenomenon these days. The average text messages received by a teen is around 10, 000 messages. Since the use of mobile phones deprived students from sleeping early, it is also found out that this fact lessens the productivity of students, thus having a poor performance in school. It has also been observed that they have been too dependent on the use of this gadget which is mainly the reason why it seems to be as natural as breathing for them. These teenagers will not likely set limits on the use of this gadget for themselves that is why parents, as an authoritarian over their children set boundaries for them instead. The impact on the use of mobile phones is most likely destructive for teenagers. It may affect different aspects on the growth of a teenager, even their health is at risk if not immediate action is taken.

The Jersey Journal created the message being conveyed by the article. Several techniques were used by the writers to attract its readers. One of which is that the article is informative though it is written in an editorial form. The message or issue on the article was too timely for teenagers especially in today’s generation since you can almost see everyone with their gadgets and phones on their hands. There is also this sense of pity and sadness as I read through the article due to the fact that these inventions lessen the productivity of people. People tend to be lazier since everything is right at their fingertips. I believe the value of knowing how and when to set your limits left out an impact to its readers. It is said that too much of anything is bad and it is made true in this article as what the message of this article is trying to impart to its readers. The message is being sent since the excessive use of mobile phones is continuously being rampant in the age. The message is powerful and will surely make an impact to its readers, whether parents or teenagers. The author/s as well sent this message to somehow change the attitude of the youth towards the use of gadgets. If teenagers will be able to read this article, I believe the productivity of people will rise. This article is informative and helpful for its readers. It surely leaves a mark on a person’s perspective no matter what age group you are in. The article is well-written and topic is thoroughly discussed. I highly recommend this article for teenagers to read, and as well as for the parents as well.

One Day by David Nicholls

Theme/Genre: Romance, Comedy, Drama
Form: Book/Novel
Author: David Nicholls

This novel talks about the journey of two people for twenty years. Emma and Dexter met on their graduation night in England. Their conversations covered up how their life will be when they’re at the age of 40. Every chapter of the book highlights what happens every July 15 successively for two decades. Emma started out her career by writing and performing plays while Dexter travels around the world, hooking up with girls. Both parties had various attempts on being in a relationship, and while they have relationships with other people, they both chose to be best friends, though both of them are longing for one another. Emma after sometime breaks up with her boyfriend after coming into a realization that he really loves another man. Emma and Dexter met again at a wedding, and Emma admits to herself she wants Dexter back. But at this point, Dexter has fallen in love with another woman who is pregnant at that time. After realizing things, they talked about their relationship in which Emma chooses Dexter. They got married and were living happy together until one day, Emma got into a bike accident in which she died. Three years after Emma’s death, Dexter, together with his daughter traveled to England where he met Emma, and they climbed the same mountain he climbed with Emma 19 years ago.

The novel One Day was written by David Nicholls. The book used creative techniques such as the use of wide imagination for the storyline of the author. The book also focused on one specific date, which is July 15, on different years and narrated events that took place on that date. It dawned to me that I should appreciate people more and never delay and or hesitate to make them feel how much I love them because it might be too late if you don’t cherish every moment you spend with them. The values of love and immediate appreciation are two of the things that came up into my realization as I read through this book. I believe the powerful message of this book was sent to its readers because in today’s age, people don’t know how to value what they have in life. They don’t know how to be content with whatever they have; they tend to focus on the flaws of their lives and therefore overlooking and neglecting the people who deserves their appreciation. I highly recommend reading this book for the values it will put upon you, not only in the romantic aspect but in life as well.
